Some Chemistry Notes for this month...
Notes for Week 1:
Matter**
Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume).
Chemistry**
The study of how all matter interacts.
Element**
One specific type of matter. There are 92 naturally occurring elements, 117 different elements (Ex = gold, silver, oxygen, carbon).
Atom**
The smallest particle of an element that has all the properties of the element.
Cannot be seen with a light microscope
Location Mass Charge
Nucleus Center of the atom # of protons Positive
Proton Nucleus 1 atomic mass unit (amu) Positive (+1)
Neutron Nucleus 1 amu Neutral (0)
Electron Outside the nucleus 0 amu Negative (-1)
Notes week 2:
All matter is made of elements.
Periodic Table of Elements**
Chart that organizes all of the elements by their qualities
Everything in the universe is made from a combination of these elements
Atomic Number**
Number of Protons
Atomic Mass**
How heavy the atom is (protons + neutrons)
Energy Levels**
Electrons move around the nucleus in different energy levels
•Level 1 holds 2 electrons.
•Level 2 holds 8 electrons.
•Level 3 holds 8 electrons.
Periods**
Rows across on the periodic table
Groups/Families**
Columns going down on the periodic table
Valence electrons*
Electrons on the outermost energy level
•Group 1: Alkali Metals
•Group 2: Alkaline Earth Metals
•Group 17: Halogen Group
•Group 18: Noble Gases
•Elements in the same group (column) have the same number of valence electrons. They react in similar ways.
Notes week 3
Chemical Bond**Connection between two elements
H – H H – O – H
Compound** One or more elements joined together with a bond
Chemical formula** Formula showing number of atoms of each element
Subscript** Small number tells you number of atoms
